2019 will be a great year for Disney’s live-action remakes of its famous animated films. There will be no less than three of them this year, including Aladdin and The Lion King, both major summer releases. The first entry of the year, however, will be the reinvention of Disney’s flying elephant; Dumbo. It seems an unusual choice for a remake, but according to the cast and the team that is making the new Dumbo a reality, it seems that the right people are involved to make this film something special.
While many of Disney’s remakes have been just recounts of the original story, Dumbo is different in that it is going to create a lot of completely new material to complete the story of the misfit elephant. The basic premise is still there, but there is much more involved.
Luckily, we no longer have to ask how the elephant of the same name will look in this reimagination of Disney’s classic tale. In mid-June 2018 a Dumbo trailer was released, followed by a full trailer in November that gives us a good look at the cute character, along with many of his human castmates. And from what we’ve seen, it looks like it could be a wonderfully magical story.
Dumbo has been rated PG by the MPAA. This puts the film on a par with Disney’s four most recent live-action remakes; Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast all finished with PG ratings. While the original Dumbo is a G-rated movie, it seems quite difficult to secure that rating these days. However, the 1996 live-action remake of 101 Dalmatians did it. It’s hard to imagine what could be added to Dumbo that would make it unsuitable for young children, even though the original film included an elephant that got drunk, which probably gives it at least a PG rating today.
Dumbo will be Disney’s second major release in 2019. On March 8, Marvel will open things up with Captain Marvel and Dumbo will follow closely on March 29, 2019. It opens the week after the sequel to Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There are also a number of potential competitors for the family film that will be released approximately at the same time, with the long-awaited opening of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” in February. While Dumbo is opening out the “summer movie season”, it is opening in the same window as the remake of Beauty and the Beast did, so a good box-office success is certainly possible.
The original Dumbo was Disney’s fourth animated film, and its story is quite simple, as evidenced by the film’s 64-minute runtime. Dumbo is born, is mistreated by other animals because of his abnormally large ears, and befriends a mouse that then helps him discover his talent for flying provided by the huge ears. This makes Dumbo a circus star. There’s not much more there, which explains why the new movie adds so much to the story, mainly through new human characters.
This version of Dumbo will focus mainly on a character named Holt Ferrier, a former circus star who is now a different man who has returned from the war. Ferrier is hired by Max Medici as the caretaker of Dumbo, a baby elephant who plays the role of circus laugher, largely because of his oversized ears. However, after Ferrier’s sons discover that, incredibly, Dumbo can use his big ears as wings to fly, a great businessman named V.A. Vandevere and the famous acrobat Colette Marchant become interested in Dumbo when they see the potential and money the animal can generate for them.
Disney’s live-action remakes have had great success with the public in recent years. However, the additions to Dumbo will make this the first film since Malefica to tell a significantly different story from the animated film that inspired it. The question is, how open is the audience to seeing a very different Dumbo story?
